EIT Health is one of the largest healthcare initiatives worldwide. Its goal is to improve the sustainability of healthcare systems, promote healthy living and active ageing and enhance the overall wellbeing of people across Europe. EIT Health leverages the expertise of more than 130 leading organisations from key areas of healthcare such as pharma, medtech, ICT, imaging, diagnostics and consumer products, as well as some of the world’s leading academic and research organisations, healthcare providers, public authorities and municipalities.
The EIT (European Institute for Innovation & Technology) is an independent EU body set up in 2008 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe. It brings together leading higher education institutions, research labs and companies to form dynamic cross-border partnerships that develop innovative products and services, start new companies, and train a new generation of entrepreneurs. EIT Health is one of the most recent Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) of the EIT.
EIT Health is headquartered in Munich (Germany), with six co-location centres in London (UK/Ireland), Stockholm (Scandinavia), Barcelona (Spain), Paris (France), Mannheim and Heidelberg (Germany/Switzerland) and Rotterdam (Belgium/Netherlands). All six co-location centres provide shared physical space, with access to laboratories, test beds, offices and seminar rooms that promote close cooperation among member organisations. This cooperation is further supported by the EIT Health InnoStars, regional clusters consisting of industry partners, academia, and health providers in six countries – Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Italy, and Wales.
Europe is facing demographic change, resulting in pressure on health and social care costs. The essential goal of EIT Health is to provide answers to future challenges of healthcare, thus strengthening the European healthcare ecosystem while supporting people in maintaining and managing their health. EIT Health believes that the challenges of demographic change and ageing societies can only be addressed if people and their knowledge are fully leveraged across all health-related sectors and new ideas are rapidly turned into innovative solutions and services.
EIT Health is a strong, diverse and balanced partnership of best-in-class organisations in education, research, technology, business creation and corporate and social innovation. EIT Health will foster cooperation and unlock Europe’s innovation and growth potential – developing and retaining the best talents, creating high-quality jobs and boosting the global competitiveness of European industry.
EIT Health is guided by the understanding that societal challenges not only present a risk but also provide a multitude of new opportunities. Considering innovation as the basis for growth, competitiveness and social well-being, EIT Health has developed three distinct fields of activity along the three sides of the knowledge triangle. EIT Health is set to build on and promote interdisciplinary innovation within its European network (EIT Health Innovation Projects) and to accelerate business creation processes (EIT Health Accelerator). Moreover, EIT Health branded education programmes (EIT Health Campus) offer a range of new and extended business and application-oriented courses for European students and talents.
